Listen and dream
These songs might whet your appetite they might not, but I am sure for one they will bring back memories or make new ones. Some songs have a different impact at different times, I think the Lyrics of Banana pancakes, for example, take on another meaning during Corona times.
Strawberry fields forever The Beatles
Strawberry Field was a children’s home and part of John Lennon’s childhood memories. Despite that, if I hear that song at this time of year, I do think of strawberries – picking and eating them at the same time, Strawberries and cream, Strawberry cake and so on
That´s Amore by of course the unmistakeable Dean Martin
When you hear that line: “When the moon hits your eye like a big-a pizza pie,” what comes to mind? Pictures of romance, Southern Italy, the Italian flair? And a big pizza pie, if that´s not enough to get your mouth watering…
A marshmallow world Bing Crosby
This is a Christmas song, so of course, it makes you think of that time of year. Hot chocolate with marshmallows anyone?
The candy Man Sammy Davis Jr.
Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. Enough candy? Like any other song that Sammy Davis Jr. sings, it even sounds cool.
Life is a Minestrone 10cc.
“Everything we pile in there” is what Eric Stewart said about the song. That is certainly what life is. What better time to realize that than now.
Minestrone is one of the oldest dishes in Italian cuisine. The Romans prepared a vegetable soup 2000 years ago. They collected the ingredients: onions, carrots, garlic, mushrooms and herbs from the garden and the woods.
Jambalaya (On the Bayou) – Karen Carpenter
This is also a sort of casserole similar to paella but with Cajun and French influences. Extremely delicious.
Karen had such a beautiful voice.
The Watermelon Man Herbie Hancock
The melody of the song originated from the call of a watermelon vendor in Chicago.
I am sure most people have heard this song, some may not know what it is called.
Brown Sugar The Rolling Stones
From the Album “Sticky fingers” ok it´s not really about brown sugar.
Somebody told me that this was her favourite baking song – whatever it takes!
A cup of coffee, a sandwich and you Many interpretations
This was written by Al Dubin, Joseph Meyer and Billy rose for a revue in 1926!
Banana pancakes Jack Johnson
Johnson said of this song: “It’s a wakeup in the morning and make breakfast with your family kind of song. It started when my wife was busy doing something and I wanted to distract her.”
Banana pancakes are a big hit with vegans these days.
Summer Wine by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood
This song and “These boots were made for walking” made them unforgettable after everyone thought they wouldn´t make it.
Life is just a bowl of cherries
I chose this one because it´s the cherry season right now; it prompts you not to take life so seriously – (so you can slow down); and in honour of Doris Day.
Tea for Two
Although we already had a title with tea, this one had to go in because of the amazing dancing, it just has to brighten up your mood.
This article by Tiffany Jenkins, BBC Culture, explains why songs evoke memories, or in this case why songs whet your appetite. Songs and our memory
